How to Choose the Next Event You’re Going To

Choosing an event shouldn’t feel like throwing a dart at a board and hoping for the best.

But most of the time, that is how we pick them!

We see a name we recognise, a few people we know posting about going, and suddenly we've booked a ticket without really thinking about anything else.

Or, sometimes it is the complete opposite!

There are too many events that are happening within a similar time frame and we don't know which ones we should be going to - and end up going to none!

Either of these sound familiar?

What You Should Actually Be Looking For

Before you book your next event, ask yourself:

What do I want to walk away with?

Not vaguely.

A tangible thing that you are going to get out of the event.

What is it that you need to improve on at the moment?

Is it knowledge - look for a speaker on that particular topic or an event that is solely based on that topic.

Is it systems

Is it connections

Know what it is that you want to get out of the event before you start looking for it.

Not All Events Are Built the Same

Some events are designed to:

  • educate

  • inspire

  • connect

  • sell

And none of those are wrong.

But if you go to an event expecting one thing but it's designed for something else, then you will leave disappointed and think the event was bad.

But it wasn't the events fault - it was misaligned.

Do your research. Otherwise you will start hating events and feel like they are not for you when it just the wrong room that you are in.

The Experience Matters More Than the Agenda

Two events can have:

  • the same speakers

  • the same topics

  • similar audiences

And feel completely different.

But why?

The overall experience.

And there is a lot that goes into this - some of which you won't be able to find out on the sales page!

So stalk the event organisers - see if you can watch any of their content and get a feel for who they are as hosts. What are they focusing on in their messaging about the event? Does it sound like the type of event you would like to go to?

Who is saying that they are going? Do you know any of them to reach out and ask about the event (if it is not the first time the event has been run).

What about the speakers - what are they going to be talking about - do you align with them and what they stand for? Can you learn from them?

Researching the different events that are coming up will take more work - but it is always worth doing the extra work when you are not sure.

Before you book, ask:

  • What kind of people will be there?

  • Will I actually get a chance to connect with them?

  • Is this set up for interaction or just sitting and listening?

  • Does this align with where I am in my business right now?

Being at the wrong event wastes your money, time and energy.

Being at the right event can change everything!

It’s Not About Going to More Events

It’s about going to the right ones.

You don’t need:

  • more tickets

  • more lanyards

  • more pics for the grid!

But when you find the right rooms - you will know! And you will want to tell all of your friends about it and bring them along for the ride as well.

But when you get to this part - still remember that you are going to events to learn, connect or any of the other goals that you set yourself.

We are all guilty of attending events and just hanging out with our friends - which is amazing - but not always the best thing for our business!
